Naked Pairs and Triples

When two cells in the same row, column, or box contain only the same two candidates, those two numbers must go in those two cells. This means you can eliminate those numbers from all other cells in that row, column, or box. Naked triples extend this concept — when three cells collectively contain only three candidates, those numbers are locked and can be removed from all other cells in the unit. This technique often creates a cascade of eliminations that cracks open difficult puzzles.

Hidden Pairs and Triples

Hidden pairs are the inverse of naked pairs. When two numbers appear as candidates in only two cells within a row, column, or box, those cells must contain those two numbers — even if other candidates are also present. You can eliminate all other candidates from those two cells. Hidden triples work the same way with three numbers in three cells. These techniques are harder to spot than naked pairs but are equally powerful.

X-Wing Pattern

The X-Wing is one of the most important advanced techniques. When a candidate number appears in exactly two cells in each of two rows, and those cells align in the same two columns, you have an X-Wing. This means the candidate can be eliminated from all other cells in those two columns. The pattern forms an X shape when you draw lines connecting the cells. X-Wings are powerful because they eliminate candidates across entire columns based on row constraints.

Swordfish and Jellyfish

Swordfish extends the X-Wing concept to three rows and three columns. When a candidate appears in exactly two or three cells in each of three rows, and those cells align in three columns, the candidate can be eliminated from all other cells in those three columns. Jellyfish extends this further to four rows and columns. These larger patterns are rare but decisive when they appear in expert puzzles.

Coloring and Chains

  • Simple coloring: When a candidate has exactly two positions in a unit, color them alternately and trace the implications
  • XY-Wing: Three cells with specific candidate relationships that eliminate a candidate from a fourth cell
  • Unique rectangle: Exploits the fact that Sudoku puzzles have exactly one solution
  • Forcing chains: Follow two possible paths to show they lead to the same conclusion

Practicing Advanced Techniques

The best way to learn advanced techniques is to work through puzzles that require them. Start with hard puzzles and gradually move to expert and extreme difficulty. When you get stuck, look for each technique systematically rather than randomly scanning. With practice, spotting X-Wings and hidden triples becomes as natural as spotting naked singles.
