Naval Battle: Sink Ships Like a Pro
Naval Battle (Battleship) combines strategic ship placement with probability-based hunting. Here's how to dominate the seas.
Ship Placement Strategy
Don't Cluster
Spread your ships across the entire board. Clustering makes it easier for opponents to find multiple ships once they get one hit.
Edge vs. Center
- Edges: Fewer squares to check, but ships are harder to find initially
- Center: More vulnerable to systematic searching
- Best approach: Mix it up — some edge, some center, never predictable
Avoid Patterns
Don't place ships in obvious patterns (all horizontal, all vertical, touching each other). Experienced players look for these patterns.
Hunting Strategy
Phase 1: Search Mode
Use a checkerboard pattern for initial shots:
- Shoot every other square in a diagonal pattern
- This guarantees you'll hit every ship with minimum shots
- No ship can hide in the gaps of a proper checkerboard search
Phase 2: Destroy Mode
Once you get a hit:
- Shoot all 4 adjacent squares (up, down, left, right)
- When you get a second hit, you know the ship's orientation
- Continue along that line until you sink it
- Return to search mode
Probability Thinking
- Larger unsearched areas are more likely to contain ships
- After sinking a ship, remaining ships are concentrated in unexplored areas
- A 5-cell ship can't fit in a 4-cell gap — eliminate impossible positions
Psychological Tricks
- Most players avoid corners — place ships there occasionally
- Players tend to place ships differently each game — don't assume patterns
- After finding one ship, resist tunnel vision — the board is big
Advanced: Ship Counting
Track which ships you've sunk. Knowing remaining ship sizes tells you what gaps to search:
- If only the 2-cell ship remains, ignore areas smaller than 2 cells
- If the 5-cell ship is out there, focus on the largest unexplored areas
