Chess Basics: The Board and Pieces
Chess is played on an 8x8 board with 64 squares. Each player starts with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns. White always moves first.
How Each Piece Moves
The King
The king moves one square in any direction. Protecting your king is the ultimate goal of the game.
The Queen
The most powerful piece — it moves any number of squares in any direction. The queen combines the power of the rook and bishop.
The Rook
Rooks move any number of squares horizontally or vertically. They are powerful in open files and on the seventh rank.
The Bishop
Bishops move diagonally any number of squares. Each bishop stays on its starting color for the entire game.
The Knight
Knights move in an L-shape: two squares in one direction and one square perpendicular. Knights are the only pieces that can jump over others.
The Pawn
Pawns move forward one square but capture diagonally. On their first move, pawns can advance two squares. Reaching the opposite end promotes a pawn to any other piece.
Three Golden Rules for Beginners
- Control the center: Place pieces in the center of the board for maximum mobility
- Develop your pieces: Move knights and bishops out early instead of moving the same piece twice
- Castle your king: This special move protects your king and activates your rook
How to Win
Checkmate occurs when the king is under attack and cannot escape. You can also win if your opponent resigns or runs out of time. A draw can occur by stalemate, repetition, or agreement.
