Spades Strategy: Bid Smart, Play Smart

Spades combines strategy, partnership, and risk management. Your bid determines your target — here's how to nail it every time.

Bidding Fundamentals

Your bid predicts how many tricks you'll win. Count your likely winners:

  • Aces: Count each non-spade Ace as 1 trick
  • Kings: Count each King as 0.5 tricks (depends on if Ace is out)
  • Spades: High spades are almost guaranteed tricks (Ace, King, Queen)
  • Voids/Singletons: Add 1 trick per void suit (you'll trump in)

Common Bidding Mistakes

  • Overbidding: Missing your bid costs 10× your bid in penalty points
  • Underbidding: Extra tricks (bags) pile up — 10 bags = -100 points!
  • Ignoring partner's bid: Your combined bid should be realistic

Trump Management

Spades are trump — they beat all other suits:

  • Don't waste spades early on tricks you could win with high cards
  • Save high spades for when opponents try to take tricks with their high cards
  • If you're short in a suit, use low spades to trump in

Partnership Communication

You can't talk to your partner, but your plays send signals:

  • Leading a suit: Signals you want to establish that suit
  • Playing high: Signals strength in that suit
  • Playing low: Signals weakness or disinterest

Nil Bidding

Bidding Nil (zero tricks) is worth 100 bonus points if you succeed:

  • When to bid Nil: No Aces, no Kings, few spades, lots of low cards
  • Partner's job: Win tricks to protect your Nil by playing over your cards
  • Risk: Taking even one trick means -100 points

Advanced Tips

  • Count spades — there are 13 total. Knowing how many are left is crucial
  • Break spades strategically — force opponents to use theirs early
  • In close games, bag management matters as much as making your bid
