FreeCell Strategy: Win 90%+ of Games

Unlike regular solitaire, almost every FreeCell deal is solvable. The question isn't luck — it's skill. Here's how to win consistently.

The Golden Rules

  1. Keep free cells empty: Each occupied cell reduces your mobility
  2. Plan before you move: Look 3-4 moves ahead
  3. Build on the foundations early: Move Aces and low cards up as soon as possible
  4. Don't move cards just because you can: Every move should serve a purpose

Free Cell Management

You have 4 free cells — treat them like gold:

  • Use them as temporary storage to access buried cards
  • Never fill all 4 — you need at least one free for maneuvering
  • Clear cells as quickly as possible by building on foundations

Cascade Strategy

Empty Columns Are Powerful

An empty column acts like a super free cell — you can store entire sequences. Priority: create empty columns!

Build Descending Sequences

Organize cascades in descending order with alternating colors. This creates playable sequences you can move as a unit.

Move Priority

  1. Move to foundations (always first priority)
  2. Move to create empty columns
  3. Move to build organized sequences
  4. Move to free cells (last resort)

Common Mistakes

  • Filling all free cells: You're now stuck with limited moves
  • Ignoring buried Aces: Focus on uncovering Aces early
  • Moving too fast: Plan ahead — hasty moves create unsolvable situations
  • Not using undo: If a move doesn't help, take it back!

Advanced Technique: Supermoves

You can move sequences larger than one card if you have enough empty cells and columns:

  • With 1 free cell: move sequences of 2
  • With 2 free cells: move sequences of 3
  • Each empty column doubles the maximum
