Chess Puzzles: Tactical Pattern Guide
Chess Puzzles are the fastest way to improve your chess. Each puzzle presents a position where you need to find the best move. Here are the patterns to look for.
The 7 Key Tactical Patterns
1. Fork
One piece attacks two or more enemy pieces simultaneously. Knight forks are most common and devastating — the knight's unique movement makes forks hard to see.
2. Pin
A piece attacks an enemy piece that can't move because it would expose a more valuable piece behind it. Bishops and rooks create the deadliest pins.
3. Skewer
Like a reverse pin — you attack a valuable piece, forcing it to move and exposing a piece behind it for capture.
4. Discovered Attack
Moving one piece reveals an attack from a piece behind it. Devastating because you effectively make two threats at once.
5. Back Rank Mate
A rook or queen delivers checkmate on the opponent's back rank when their king is trapped behind its own pawns.
6. Deflection
Forcing a defending piece to leave its post, exposing what it was protecting.
7. Sacrifice
Giving up material to gain a greater advantage — often leading to checkmate or winning back more material.
Puzzle-Solving Method
- Check all checks: Any move that gives check? These are forcing and should be considered first
- Check all captures: Can you take something valuable?
- Check all threats: Can you create a threat that the opponent must respond to?
- Look for patterns: Does the position match any of the 7 tactical patterns above?
Common Puzzle Themes
- "White to move and win material": Look for forks, pins, skewers
- "White to move and checkmate": Look for back rank mates, sacrifices leading to mate
- "Find the best move": Usually a combination of tactics
Building Puzzle Skill
- Solve puzzles daily — even 5 puzzles a day builds pattern recognition
- Don't move too fast — spend at least 30 seconds analyzing
- Review wrong answers to understand the correct pattern
- Try Checkers for simpler tactical practice
